Biden Must Pick a Black Woman VP or Else

As the Democratic National Convention is fast approaching, presumptive nominee Joe Biden must make his choice for VP and soon. To help him out a bit, a group of more than 100 prominent black men recently came together to give him a suggestion. Only it also came with a not so veiled threat:

Either choose a black woman to be your VP or else.

The message was sent on Monday and demanded that a black woman be chosen as the would-be vice president. If Biden were to disregard this request, the letter promises that he “will lose the election.”

The letter stated, “As someone who has said throughout the campaign that VP Joe Biden needs to choose a Black woman VP, the urgency for that pick has gone from something that SHOULD happen to something that HAS to happen.”

It continued, boasting of what the black woman has done for the Democratic party in decades past and declaring that they deserved Biden’s thanks and support. Naturally, a job as second in command would serve as a nice apology and acknowledgment of that support.

But it isn’t like the group is giving Biden much of an option. Without any subtlety, it added, “Failing to select a Black woman in 2020 means you will lose the election. We don’t want to choose between the lesser of two evils and we don’t want to vote for the devil we know versus the devil we don’t because we are tired of voting for devils – period.”

The ultimatum was signed by prominent black men such as Sean “Diddy” Combs, Lenard “Charlamagne Tha God” McKelvey, former Obama White House advisor Van Jones, and Benjamin Crump.

Crump is the famous attorney who represented the families of both Michael Brown, a black man killed while attacking a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, and Treyvon Martin, who was a teen killed during a supposed fight with neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman in Sanford Florida. Crump is now representing George Floyd’s family, as he recently died while in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

And, as USA Today reported, this isn’t the only letter like this Biden has received. Last week, the former VP apparently received a similar one from a group of more than 700 black women, although it wasn’t quite as threatening.

Essentially, what the two letters are saying is that they could care less about Joe Biden. He is not only the “lesser of two evils” but the “devil they don’t” know. They really don’t want to vote for him. But, at this point, it’s not like they have an option.

The only way to make the decision even mildly swallowable is to focus on who the VP will be.

After all, Biden made it clear fairly early in his campaign that whoever he chose as VP would have to be able to take over as President “immediately.” This suggests that either Biden’s age or mind, and possibly both, would soon become more of a hindrance than something offering experience. And since then, his constant gaffes and word blunders have given us serious reason to believe that as accurate.

So we know the choice has to be someone young and able-minded. But in March, during a debate with Bernie Sanders, Biden limited his options a bit more, announcing that he would choose a woman as running mate. Then, only a short time later, he narrowed it to a “woman of color.”

Many presumed this would mean a black woman, but that may not necessarily be the case.

His shortlist has been rumored to include the likes of New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan-Grisham, who is Latina, Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois is Thai, and, of course, there is Elizabeth Warren, who claims to be Native American.

None of these have been eliminated as an option at this point, and neither has more “white” females like Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer or Tammy Baldwin, a senator from Wisconsin.

Of course, top black contenders like Kamala Harris, Susan Rice, Val Demings, and Karen Bass of California remain in the running as well. And it is one of these who letters demand be given the title. In fact, the letter even tries to argue some of the criticism these have received, such as Harris’ “ambition,” stating it is a strength rather than a weakness.

We’ll just have to see how well Biden does with ultimatums, or should I say his staff, as he isn’t running much of anything these days, except the rat wheel in his mind.
