With the coronavirus pandemic going on, the United States and the world as been brought to its knees. Everywhere people are getting sick, enduring lockdown procedures, and experiencing financial turmoil. We only have to look out our front door to see that the world has been forced to change.
To help fight these changes and the chaos they bring with them, the American government is doing all that it can to give aid to its citizens. But while Americans wait for such help, some would have President Trump and his staff turn their attention not to our own hurting citizens but to those thousands of miles away.
Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib of Michigan recently joined forces with Alan Lowenthal of California to write an op-ed piece for the Washington Post, demanding that Trump give $75 million in assistance to Palestine.
According to the two liberal lawmakers, Palestine is seeing very tough times due to the coronavirus, and thus, needs congressionally-approved funds in assistance.
The op-ed reads, “While COVID-19 does not recognize borders, we must recognize that without aid and assistance, the Palestinian people will be greatly affected by this health crisis.”
In addition, the piece essentially blamed President Trump for the current state of things in Palestine, saying that if the president had not withheld funds from the wanna-be nation in the past, they wouldn’t be as bad off.
They wrote, “The Palestinian people are particularly vulnerable at this moment. In 2018, the Trump administration eliminated funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the international organization charged with addressing the humanitarian needs of Palestinian refugees.” And they continued, “calling on the Trump administration to release all funds appropriated by Congress to support the well-being of the Palestinian people and restore the U.S. relationship with UNRWA.”
However, they failed to mention the reasons why Trump decided to ‘eliminate’ such funding in the first place. For years, the United States has given aid to Palestine. In fact, it has been noted that since 1994, the U.S has provided relief to Palestine to the tune of more than $5 billion. And yet every year, vast sums of that funding seemed to used against America or its ally Israel.
The Palestinian Gaza Strip is known to be ruled by a terrorist Hamas government. A senior administration official told the New York Post last month, “They have indicated no interest in engaging with us, no interest in peace with Israel and, in fact, they continue – despite having coronavirus cases in Gaza – to fire rockets at the Israelis on a regular basis.” Therefore, Trump and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have been unwilling to offer aid to the area when there is a very good possibility that it could fall into the hands of terrorists.
However, that doesn’t mean they have been without concern. USAID reported already having given $5 million in aid to another part of the area that is considered Palestine, the West Bank. In contrast to the Gaza Strip, West Bank is “ruled by the comparatively more moderate Palestinian Authority,” according to the Post.
Of course, Tlaib says this is “insulting insufficient.”
But it seems in all her thoughts for Palestine, she has forgotten about her own countrymen.
As it stands right now, millions upon millions of Americans are currently out of work, awaiting unemployment checks, and spending hours waiting in food bank lines just to put food on their tables.
In her own state of Michigan, things are worse than ever. Under Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s draconian rule, millions have been forced to file for unemployment. And yet the system is so logistically flawed that thousands have still yet to receive even the slightest amount of help the state.
But rather than addressing the issues she was elected to, Tlaib would have us turn our eyes and instead focus on people in another country.
I wonder if she feeds children in Africa before she feeds her own kids.
Taxpayers in America are struggling to provide the fundamental necessities of life, and here she is demanding that more of our hard-earned taxpayer money go elsewhere.
Tell me, why in the world would we shell out millions more in funds when we can’t even afford to feed, house, and take care of our own? It makes absolutely no sense.
Then again, I wouldn’t even begin to assume that a woman like Tlaib has a lick of the common sense that someone in her position should be required to.
