Sens. Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Martin Heinrich (D-NM) have finally confirmed what most American people have known for ages- the government is collecting your information. While we knew of the NSA program thanks to Edward Snowden, that was long thought to be disbanded. Apparently, the CIA has taken up the cause and has been making quite a run with it.
As these two Democrats serve on the Senate Intelligence Committee, it is their job to look into these kinds of things, and it is refreshing to see some of the left doing their job to keep the American people informed and safe. While the letter was dated for April of 2021, it was only declassified on Thursday, with CIA documents being released in a heavily redacted format- as is usual for the organization. What Sens. Wyden and Heinrich could confirm is that the organization was operated “outside the statutory framework that Congress and the public believe govern this collection.”
This kind of allegation is especially troubling for many Americans. Given the recent leaks of American intelligence failing on multiple fronts, it is concerning how much information the CIA is collecting, and how it might be misused against our citizens. Kristi Scott, the agency’s privacy, and civil liberties officer released a statement about the investigation.
“CIA recognizes and takes very seriously our obligation to respect the privacy and civil liberties of U.S. persons in the conduct of our vital national security mission…CIA is committed to transparency consistent with our obligation to protect intelligence sources and methods.” Unfortunately for Scott, the American people cannot trust that statement. The CIA has proven time and again how unreliable and how misguided they can be with their intelligence.
The investigation into these collection efforts often leads to the usual excuses of American intel being gathered inadvertently as it just gets swept up with normal investigations. It also is often accompanied by the usual excuses that Americans need not worry and that these kinds of things are completely normal. Sadly, for many Americans that is not the case.
Many of these intel sweeps yield unnecessary information that they use to cobble together a case to do more advanced intel gathering. These efforts can make a mountain out of a molehill, and wind up with many people being incarcerated or under surveillance unfairly. Surveillance activities like these are not only unconstitutional but involve all the wrong tactics and precautions. Allowing them to continue unchallenged is un-American and irresponsible.
It’s surprising to see two Democrats speaking out against intelligence-gathering activities. The usual nothing to see here mindset is being pushed to the side in the best interests of the American people, and these two should be watching their backs. It would not be surprising if they are soon alleged to be a Democrat In Name Only (DINO).
Other DINOs as of late include Sens. Manchin (D-WV) and Sinema (D-AZ). These two have been standing up for the American people against President Biden and his nonsensical spending in the Build Back Better bill, and other horrific attempts to waste taxpayer money. With the potential inclusion of these two new Senators to the list, it is only a matter of time till the party either wipes itself completely out of American politics or becomes nothing but the progressive and socialist left. These latest reports might be the turning point to completely avoid that situation.
