Infamous Kingpin's Wife Gives Plea for Drug Trafficking

(UnitedVoice.com) – In February 2021, the Department of Justice informed the public of the arrest of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s wife Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31. Prosecutors charged her with helping her husband run the Sinaloa Drug Cartel, which at one time was the most powerful and brutal cartel in Mexico. Recently, Coronel entered a plea in her case.

On Thursday, June 10, the DOJ announced Coronel pleaded guilty to three counts against her. The charges include violating the Kingpin Act by engaging in transactions related to her husband’s property and dealings; conspiring to distribute cocaine, heroin, meth and marijuana; and conspiring to launder the proceeds from drug trafficking.

Coronel, an American citizen, has twin girls with the drug kingpin. She faces up to 20 years in prison for money laundering, 10 years for the violation of the Kingpin Act, and up to life in prison (or a minimum of 10 years) for the conspiracy to distribute narcotics. The press release from the DOJ reveals the judge will consider “statutory factors” when sentencing her. She previously pleaded not guilty to the crimes, so one has to wonder if she aided the prosecution in order to get a lighter sentence. Her sentencing will take place on September 15.
