Powell’s Books is an iconic location and one of the finest bookstores that the city has to offer. Now, they have managed to become a focal point for Antifa groups who are taking issue with them. Powell’s decision to carry a book that was written by Andy Ngo and that is all it took to have liberals up in arms.
It certainly doesn’t take much these days, does it? The book store is now considered to be a fascist hub and it must be taken down! Obviously, that last bit was sarcasm but you never know these days. People are struggling more and more when it comes to taking a joke. it_aint_pretty_ is one of the Twitter accounts that were on the scene.
They were hurling obscenities at the bookstore, taking photos of peoples’ signs, and forcing the store to close. After serving the Portland community for decades, the store is being treated like public enemy #1. Willamette Week has a report and it contains a lot of disconcerting information.
“Responding to customer outcry, Powell’s Books announced Monday it would not carry in its stores a book by the conservative pundit Andy Ngo critical of Portland anti-fascists but would continue to sell it online.
His book, Unmasked: Inside Antifa’s Radical Plan to Destroy Democracy, will be published by Hachette on Feb. 21. Over the weekend, local activists launched an online campaign demanding Powell’s drop the book.
Powell’s responded that it had not hand-selected the book, but copies had been automatically supplied by Hachette, the publisher. The bookseller said it would not promote the book, or place it on store shelves.
That answer satisfied few. Several dozen people protested outside the front doors of Powell’s City of Books on West Burnside Street on Monday afternoon, blocking the front doors, and pledged to return Tuesday morning. Others criticized Powell for bowing to pressure about which books it would stock. In response to an inquiry from WW, Ngo said he was disappointed,” the report reads.
Ngo’s letdown is understandable. It has to be frustrating to put all of this effort into a book, only to have people who do not understand where you are coming from treat you like some sort of villain. “Given that Powell’s dedicates part of every year to banned and censored books, it’s a shame they’ve made the decision to restrict in-store sales of a book by a local author weeks ahead of release,” Ngo said. “However, I also have sympathy for them given how ruthless Antifa have been in vandalizing and hurting local businesses.”
At least he is willing to remain understanding about all of this drama. Powell’s Books even issued their own statement on Twitter. This is not a bookstore that hand selects every title that is displayed in their store. It’s never enough for the liberals. “At Powell’s, a lot of our inventory is hand-picked and hand-promoted. And a lot of our inventory is not hand-picked. Unmasked by Andy Ngo came to us through an automatic data feed via one of our long-term partners, Hachette Book Group,” they began.
This makes sense, right? “This book will not be placed on our shelves. We will not promote it. That said, it will remain in our online catalog. We carry a lot of books we find abhorrent, as well as those that we treasure,” the bookstore continued. It did not take long before someone came in to tell them that they needed to change their approach.
The funniest part of all? Mein Kampf (yes, that Nazi book) is still available on their website. The people who care so deeply about what type of books are sold should probably look into that. One of the protesters found a way to excuse that, though. According to them, that book is okay to carry because it’s not “current”. Powell’s even has a Banned Book Week each year! The liberals will never miss a chance to make something out of nothing.
