The political left has always done an excellent job of saying that Trump is furthering hateful movements like white supremacy and racism. And while we all know different, it has dramatically helped their case that far righters and neo-Nazi pushers like self-proclaimed white nationalist Richard Spencer have loudly supported the current president.
But now, it seems the tables have turned.
On Monday, Spencer announced via his Twitter account that he was changing sides. He is now entirely on “Team Joe” because, well, “Liberals are clearly more competent.”
Now, you may ask how a guy who basically created the modern “alt-right” movement and literally coined that phrase has now swung to the far left of the political center. I mean this is the same guy who helped organize and spoke at the now-infamous Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, North Carolina, in 2017, where hundreds of modern-day Ku Klux Klan member, white supremacists, and neo-Nazis stormed the streets shouting out phrases like “Jews will not divide us.”
And this is the same man who, when attending a National Policy Institute (a white identity think tank) event in Washington, shouted “heil Trump” and encouraged Nazi salutes in honor of our president.
And yet now, he seems to be giving all that up, or at least his support of Trump.
He now says, “The MAGA/Alt-Right moment is over. I made mistakes, but mainly the paradigm contained flaws that we now are able to perceive. And it needs to end.”
Spencer apparently began to lose faith in Trump in 2017 when Trump ordered an airstrike on Syria and, most recently, when the President had Iranian General Qassem Soleimani killed. He wrote on Twitter at the time, “I deeply regret voting for and promoting Donald Trump in 2016. To the people of Iran, there are millions of Americans who do not want war, who do not hate you, and who respect your nation and its history.”
But don’t let that or his recent decision to change parties think that Spencer has had much of a change of heart. He just no longer thinks Trump is the vehicle to bring his ideal version of America into reality, you know, the one “dedicated to the heritage, identity, and future of people of European descent in the United States, and around the world,” as the National Policy Institute’s website says. Instead, that task seems to have fallen to Biden and Harris.
Spencer even adds in his announcement of support for Biden that his near 81,000 followers should “be patient. We’ll have another day in the sun. We need to recover and return in a new form.” And apparently, his new form is alt-left…
When asked by other social media users about his support for Biden, he made it clear: this was not just a way to get Trump out of office, as so many other Democrats are doing. Instead, he clearly stated, “I plan to vote for Biden and a straight democratic ticket. It’s not based on “accelerationism” or anything like that.” It’s just because “liberals are more competent” and, therefore, might be more able to achieve his plan successfully.
His principles have not changed. In fact, he says as much in his recent posts, citing that he will “never flip on my fundamental principles. Walking into certain defeat, even death is not heroic. It’s foolhardy. I have no sympathy for martyrs. I admire winners.”
Apparently, we aren’t the only ones who are noticing the hate and violence that has been allowed to take over the larger cities of this once prized and respected nation. Spencer can see just as clearly that if he wants to further division and hate, he needs to side with the left, not the right, as the left seems to be winning if the media is to be believed.
However, Spencer’s would-be winner doesn’t really admire him back, or at least his campaign doesn’t. The word is still out on whether Biden even knows where he is at the moment.
The Biden campaign, naturally, was quick to disavow Spencer’s support and let him know that it was not welcome.
Andrew Bates, Biden’s rapid response director, replied to Spencer, “When Joe Biden says we are in a battle for the soul of our nation against vile forces of hate who have come crawling out from under rocks, you are the epitome of what he means. What you stand for is absolutely repugnant. Your support is 10,000% percent unwelcome here.”
